Este libro trata sobre el estudio del comportamiento resistente de componentes de máquinas y estructuras
sometidos a tensiones que varían con el tiempo, las cuales causan un deterioro progresivo del material que
puede acabar produciendo la rotura. La fatiga aparece en la mayoría de los productos y tiene una influencia
decisiva en ámbitos como el de la automoción, el de los ferrocarriles, el aeronáutico, el aeroespacial y el naval,
entre otros. La mayor parte de las roturas en servicio que se producen son debidas a la fatiga; hay
estimaciones en las que se afirma que alrededor del 90 % de todos los fallos de elementos resistentes se
deben a esta y se evalúa el coste, directo e indirecto, de dichos fallos en un porcentaje del 3 % al 5 % del
producto interior bruto de los países desarrollados.
